I went to the cinema last night to see A Hologram for the King and The Nice Guys. (Links are to their IMDb pages). Both these films were great though I would have to say The Nice Guys was my favourite purely for how funny it was.
A Hologram for the King
A failed American businessman looks to recoup his losses by traveling to Saudi Arabia and selling his idea to a wealthy monarch.
Tom Hanks was excellent in this film, and I really enjoyed watching him react to the culture differences in Saudi Arabia.
This felt like a coming of age film for a man, instead of teenager. The movie flowed very well, though I would have liked the ending to be a bit longer (I just want some more information).
I really liked the way
I loved this film, and it one of those films that you can watch again in a couple of years and still be absolutely captivated.
The Nice Guys
A mismatched pair of private eyes investigate the apparent suicide of a fading porn star in 1970s Los Angeles.
This was a hilarious film from start to finish. It was outrageously funny, and this was only helped along but the unbelievable plot.
If the same movie, with the same plot line was pitched to be set in the current time I don’t think it would work. These action, conspiracy films have become very serious, and by setting The Nice Guys in the 1970’s it gave a new lease of life to the tiring genre of films.
Russel Crowe and Ryan Gosling are an excellent pair, and the comedy worked well between this pair.
Both films are great and I would recommend you go see both for different reasons. A Hologram for the King, if you are in the mood for a heart warming story about a regular life. While The Nice Guys would be for when you are in the mood for a laugh and to watch some amazing chase scenes.
What film (new or old) have you really enjoyed recently?
