Book Review: The Shiver Trilogy

This is a spoiler free review

Title: Shiver, Linger, Forever
Author: Maggie Stiefvater
Publisher: Scholastic

Blurb

20409605For years, Grace has watched the wolves in the woods behind her house. One yellow-eyed wolf—her wolf—is a chilling presence she can’t seem to live without. Meanwhile, Sam has lived two lives: In winter, the frozen woods, the protection of the pack, and the silent company of a fearless girl. In summer, a few precious months of being human… until the cold makes him shift back again.

Thoughts and Feelings

20409614I have loved Shiver for a very long time, and it wasn’t until this year that I actually acquired the next two books in the series, and then it wasn’t until recently when I actually got round to reading all three books. Since finishing, my love for Shiver has grown and this series has definitely climbed into my top 10 series list.

Since I am reviewing this series as a whole, all three books work great together. I didn’t feel the classic second book slump before the third book wraps everything up. The second book is actually my favourite, and its ending made me cry (so look forward to that).

20409629Let’s get down to the characters, the glue that keeps a plot from falling apart, and boy does this book actually contain characters. Since this book is told from different points of views, you actually get to connect to the characters in a way that doesn’t happen from a book told from the view of one person.

Grace, is a self-sufficient lonely girl who doesn’t fully understand how deep her connection to the wolves go. Sam, is a boy being dragged one way and fighting like hell to go the other way. Isabel, is hurt and healing. Cole, well he is not in the first book but he is even more messed up that Isabel. Beck, is the father Sam has idolised all his life. Together they make the Shiver Trilogy special to me.

Slight Spoiler Coming Up:
My favourite part of the book is the fact that when you are reading from Grace’s or Sam’s point view and they are with each other it seems so natural, that they just are. But when you switch to another characters point of view, and they comment on how Grace and Sam act around each other, you realise just how soppy their love is. I really like how their love is written, it is slow then fast, just how I imagine it must be to fall in love.
Slight Spoilery Section Over

Favourite Character: Sam
Favourite Book: Linger
Favourite Quote: “You´re like a song I heard when I was a little kid but forgot I knew until I heard it again.”

Rating

five star 5

This trilogy is s supernatural love story that makes my heart hurt just thinking about it. If you love a a story with werewolves, you will fall in love with the ones in Mercy Falls.
